So what's in my mind today?😊 Often do I contemplate upon the essential qualities to have a clear, pure and content mind! One such quality which I could think about is Forgiveness, isn't it? If yes, why is it so?
Each day of our life, we encounter characters who are polite, gentle, compassionate etc. and few others who are harsh, insulting, indifferent. Naturally, we focus more on those bad experiences and this will build up resentment, anger or even hatred. Here we loose the control of mind, gets haunted by mental whispers to give that insult back, to be indifferent. Our mind who is supposed to be our friend turns up against ourselves as an enemy. Restless mind will have a negative impact on each and every activity we do! Presence of mind is lost here!
Can we try this simple exercise? Respond with action if necessary, but mentally forgive. Instead of being resentful, lets try mentally forgiving the one we had an unpleasant experience with. Try to view the state of things from the perspective of that individual and be ready to forgive him/her. Understand that even for that individual, his/her mind wasn't totally not in control. If we practice this consciously, we may feel that your mind is once again clear, pure and ever peaceful; notice the tranquility within; notice the completeness of sleep you get on that day. Its important to be clear that that we are not doing this as a favour to others, this is for our own peace and contentment, for freeing our own mind. In fact, forgiving them is a subtle and sweet form of revenge :)
Similarly if the perpetrator admits his/her unpleasant act and seeks forgiveness, be ready to give it wholeheartedly. This paves the way for a healthy relation with almost everyone you encounter. Forgiveness purifies your mind and drives away restlessness, anxiety and helps you being more present.
Forgiveness may not be possible in extreme cases where you had extreme, unbearable experiences. Here I am talking about forgiveness in common life situations. Of course, there are many variables involved in matters related to forgiveness which I am not addressing here. I see this as a chance to share my thoughts, that's all! I could be right or wrong!
Many a times, we misinterpret forgiveness as lack of self respect. I believe self respect is something completely different. In fact, forgiveness in common life situations enhances your self respect, it shows your maturity and compassion.
